It is a wonderful treat, Romolo's cannoli, and my whole family loves them! Don't worry about them retiring because I hear they are passing on their secret recipes, and business, to their grandson. So Romolo's Factory is going to be there for atleast another a generation.

They'll make you a cannoli you can't refuse!

Long time San Matean here, we are blessed with Romolo's. I have had cannoli at Modern Pastry in Boston and Romolo's has them beat...not by much...I shudder to think what will happen when they decide to retire!

I thought Modern Pastry was really outstanding as well; after taking a tour of Boston's North End with one of the two most food-obsessive people I know, I was convinced they were the best available there. I haven't had the opportunity to compare a Romolo's vs. a Modern Pastry cannol side-by-side, so I don't think I'd pick one over the other.

Then again, Modern Pastry is a every-couple-of-years kind of thing, while Romolo's is something I can have any time I get a craving. :-)

I agree...Romolo's Cannoli (San Mateo, CA) are supreme. I've had Modern's cannoli in Boston and while they're pretty good they don't approach the delicacy, the quality, the taste, or the "prima pasticcieria" status that Romolo's cannoli have.

Yes, when I visited last, I got all of the components for a dozen cannoli. When I got home, I put the filling into a ziplock bag, cut a corner off, and used my home-made pastry piping bag to fill a shell, and ate it right there.

I'm not a fan of the powdered sugar, myself, I basically like just the shell and the filling. But there's no way the shell lasts any amount of time once the filling is in, so the only way to take them to-go is to get a kit. Go nuts!

I came across this post completely by accident -- but I could not agree more! These cannolli are amazing. I stop by whenever I can and ALWAYS leave with a big smile on my face (and a few "to go.")

Recently, I brought some to two family functions and now everyone is a fan.

I also recently learned that customers can buy the canolli unfilled, allowing us to put them together immediately before consuming them. The process of filling the shells is fun! And you won't miss out on anything. The unfilled treats come in a box with shells, cheese, powdered sugar, and even the green and red cherry end caps. If you have kids in the family, the do-it-yourself version is really cool. (OK, it is cool even for the adults).

Cheers,
