@AvidReader: To my knowledge, no. That’s another limitation of this self-contained format. You don’t have access to the plain audio tracks, and that has many unfortunate consequences. That’s why I only recommend these audiobook apps for people who are brand new to audiobooks, and only as the easiest way to experiment with listening.

Is there any way one can transfer the audio of a self-contained audiobook app to a CD to listen to it without an iphone or itunes?

@Steve: You might be interested in my review of Bookmark, which describes one such non-Apple application. Bookmark is fully capable of playing audiobooks in the background, so you can surf, play Bejeweled, tweet, or whatever.

I just read through your review. One thing to mention about your comment in the Audiobook Playback section (“More seriously, you can only listen to the audiobook while you are in the app. There is no background playback…”): I believe the only apps that can run in the background are those provided by Apple itself, so it’s not really a valid criticism. I’ve listened to books running on a few player apps and they all have the same issue. If you’ve found a non-Apple app that does, in fact, continue to play while you go off and play a game, I’d be curious to hear.
