Memorial Day Weekend Sale on Elvis & Sookie at Audible

by Michael Alderete on 5/26/2012’s Memorial Day sale is celebrating the three day weekend (in the US) with three different series on sale. Every book in each series is available, and priced at $7.95, a serious savings. Get a book for the price of a decent six pack, or a Summer’s worth of listening for half what you spent on that new Weber grill.

The Three Series Sale at

Two of the three series are terrific, with Elvis Cole being one of my favorites.

First is the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series from Robert Crais. Elvis is a private detective in LA, and Joe is his ass-kicking buddy. It’s a formula that is used a lot in mystery fiction (nice guy + the heavy), but Crais makes it work well, and the books are definitely driveway listening (where you can’t leave your car until you finish a chapter).

I listened to what was the entire series a few years ago, but we have all the books. I’m saving up until I have five new ones, and then I’m going to re-listen to the entire series.

  1. The Monkey’s Raincoat
  2. Stalking the Angel
  3. Lullaby Town
  4. Free Fall
  5. Voodoo River
  6. Sunset Express
  7. Indigo Slam
  8. L.A. Requiem
  9. The Last Detective
  10. The Forgotten Man
  11. The Watchman (Pike)
  12. Chasing Darkness
  13. The First Rule (Pike)
  14. The Sentry (Pike)
  15. Taken

The narration varies throughout the series, with no performer doing more than a couple books. Most are pretty good, with the biggest exception being The First Rule, narrated by the author. This can work if a book is a memoir, but it rarely works in fiction unless the author is also a skilled actor. Still, even this book moves along, and it’s worth a listen if only to truly understand the level of skill that a really good narrator brings to the table.

The other really enjoyable series in the sale is the Sookie Stackhouse Southern mysteries. If you’ve watched or heard about the television series True Blood, these are the original novels that inspire the show. They are, uh, lighter than the Elvis Cole books, but they are fun, what my brother calls “mind candy”.

  1. Dead Until Dark
  2. Living Dead in Dallas
  3. Club Dead
  4. Dead to the World
  5. Dead as a Doornail
  6. Definitely Dead
  7. All Together Dead
  8. From Dead to Worse
  9. Dead and Gone
  10. Dead in the Family
  11. Dead Reckoning

Johanna Parker is a wonderful narrator, and brings Sookie to life in a way that I could never do in my own head. She covers all of the books, and it’s always terrific to see a series find the right voice that embodies the character, and then stick with them.

All of these novels are on sale for just $7.95, which is about half what you pay if you’re a subscriber and use credits, and a third what you pay if you just buy audiobooks a la cart. Sale ends Tuesday at noon Eastern, which is 9am Pacific.
